Clare Short resigns Labour whip

Clare Short has taken the next logical step in her political career and resigned the Labour whip (from Sky News). She narrowly escaped having the whip withdrawn after her anti-Labour outburst a few weeks ago. This resignation is a good move on her part. Certainly better than sitting around and waiting to be expelled, which would no doubt have happened eventually, given the way she was going. Independent MPs are a good thing for democracy, and I am willing to forgive her her past misjudgements. Let’s wipe the slate clean and see how well she does as an independent.

    An absolute disgrace. Check out her 2005 election leaflet here. I would be outraged if I had voted for her at the last election.

    On reflection, it would have been better for her to resign as an MP, and stand as an independent in the ensuing bye-election. But why should a little thing like a mandate stand between a politician and the public purse? Remember Shawn Woodward in Witney.

    We are also facing the prospect of Gordon Brown taking over the Labour leadership, and with it, the Prime Minister’s post. Don’t expect him to go running to the electorate to endorse him. He will soldier on without a ‘mandate’.

    We also have the scandal of MPs in Scottish seats voting in Parliament on English matters which are nothing to do with Scotland. Mandate? That concept went out with the ark.

    It hasn’t done her reputation any harm at all as far as the public is concerned, we all admire a woman who stands up for her beliefs. And yes, she should be Independent.
