Social and political commentary from a conservative perspective

Is anyone surprised by the news (in the Independent) that millions of adults have such poor reading skills that it will hamper their karaoke performance this Christmas?

And since when has the fear of a bad karaoke performance ever deterred anyone, anyway?

I’m not surprised, I used to go to one of the pubs that had karaoke just to laugh at the piss poor performances, the problem was that there were a few good singers, one used to do an excellent job of sounding like Neil Diamond.

I remember going to a pub on a Sunday night and the woman who was in charge was always trying to get someone to sing ‘Oklahoma.’ That is the title song from the musical and not the whole thing! The reason for this was that anyone who sang it fell flat on their arse. I rose to the challenge and the woman’s face was amazing. My cousin told her I was a musician and was a member of the local operatic society. She never put up a similar challenge again. As a footnote; about a year later I took the part of ‘Curly’ in Oklahoma and of course sang the same song.

Morag would sit naked in the window of Harvey Nicholls crocheting a blanket before she would do karaoke. And no it is not a snob thing it’s an Ultimate Fear thing. Fear of what I am not sure…………this bears investigating further. Maybe if I regarded it as an opportunity to showcase my spelling skills………

One of the most unreal experiences I have had was in a seedy West Norwood pub at 3pm, watching a man dressed as dracula bellowing out Black Betty at the top of his voice.

By the way I don’t think anyone, however feral, would have trouble reading those lyrics.

How could poor reading affect the quality of karaoke? Most people are so drunk by the time they get to the microphone, that it would be impossible for them to read the words anyway! … or is that just me?
