I was tagged by James Higham of Nourishing Obscurity.

What are the seven best things I did this year?

1) Stayed up late after midnight

2) Went with the flow

3) Wrote a book

4) Joined the blogging community

5) Improved my Ancient Greek

6) Learnt Movable Type (believe me, this is worthy of inclusion)

7) Indulged my love of yellow socks, art and Rilke.

I am tagging: Andrew Allison, Colin Campbell, Ian, English Republican, Morag, President Ahmadinejad of Iran (great idea, Martine), and The Waendel Journal. Sorry, guys. Have fun.

Do you think Movable Type is harder than Wordpress?

  2. Bel Says:

By far harder. Especially as you have to install it yourself. You take your vitamins, turn out the lights, take a deep breath, then begin: you download the zipped folder, edit the config file, FTP it up to your server, build the MySQL database, and hope for the best. It doesn’t work, so you delete and start all over again. It still doesn’t work. Then after eight hours and 16 attempts, just as you are about to give up and pay $99 to SixApart to install it for you, you take another look and discover that you were uploading an image file as ASCII instead of Binary, hence the problems. You fix that, and Movable Type appears on your website in all its glory.

ONLY THEN can you now start to learn how to use it.

  3. Ian Says:

Gee, thanks, Bel. I feel it’s only fair to warn you I have worked in TEFL. I therefore have a not inconsiderable arsenal of “activities”, aka thinly-veiled ploys to get hapless students to produce quantities of language, which are just dying to be turned into memes for the delight and edification of bloggers everywhere. And I’m not afraid to use them.

  4. Ian Says:

OK, I’ve done my homework. :)

  5. Andrew Allison Says:

I was checking my e-mails and having a look around some blogs on Christmas Day, and then I got my present from you. ‘Tis the season of goodwill I suppose, so I am thinking and will post later tonight. Then I will be visiting friends in France for the next week. I can’t wait!

I hope you have had a good Christmas and I wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year.

  6. Martine Martin Says:

I’d love to take credit for that one, but I was following a tradition started by Strange Stuff, including our dear Iranian President. One of these he’s sure to join in ;)

Great list. I’m amused I’ve managed to escape this particular tag (before anyone gets any bright ideas, I’m happy for it to stay that way)!
