Social and political commentary from a conservative perspective

The travails of Margaret Beckett

An article in the Grauniad by former New Labour spin-doctor Lance Price, sympathising with the Foreign Secretary, Margaret Beckett. Apparently, the poor darling is in a difficult position, twisting herself in knots to endorse the execution of Saddam Hussein, when she is herself strongly opposed to the death penalty. She was also unhappy about the Cabinet decision to update Trident.

Our poor Maggie needn’t suffer so. She could always resign.

Just a thought.

New Labour doesn’t do that! Lord Denning used to say he had “all the Christian virtues except resignation”. Labour’s Ministers don’t have any of them, alas. It will be the Devil’s own job to get rid of them, which puts my in mind of a Rolling Stones song…

When she first got the FO job, I thought, “I’m glad a woman of her age with bad hair can get a top cabinet post” but she’s so out of her depth that it would be better if she said nothing at all about most events!

Like Justin said, it’s got bad when even the New Statesman is putting the boot in…

Incidentally, Bel, I like your new comments box, very flash.

Thank you, Ian. It’s a word press plug-in written by some charitable soul. All I had to do was activate it. :)

Good points. I think she suffers from indispensibility disease- that its bad now but would be worse without me. That’s what makes resignation so unpopular.

Resignation comes with a loss of money and perks. Who of us would leave their jobs easily?

Don’t get me wrong, the position is beyond her and her position in the cabinet immoral given what we know of her beliefs. Given that she has already betrayed these then of course she can rationalise accepting filthy lucre.
