Human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce on Sky News today. That can only mean one thing, a terror suspect is bringing a law suit for one thing or another.
And sure enough, it was Abu Qatada, appealing unsuccessfully against a deportation order.
Why is it that people like that who hate the western way of life so much will fight tooth and nail to stay here? I would have thought he would be cock-a-hoop at the prospect of being returned to Jordan. But no. He is worried that he faces torture or death if deported. So now he turns for deliverance to the courts system of the country so despised by him and his ilk.
Unfortunately for him, the Special Immigration Appeals Commission was not swayed by his protestations, and barring any further legal moves, Abu Qatada should be on a plane home some time soon.
On your way now, Abu Qatada. You will have a good time far away from the contaminating influences of western society. Keep yourself ‘pure’, and if ever you feel tempted to return here, you must do your utmost to resist.

Extra helpings of Bel sarcasm tonight, I see
Don’t worry, Bel, I’m not going to defend him.
That would be silly.
Quite right you are in this instance, Bel. This silly idea of not deporting people who face the death penalty is bizarre.
Would we not deport a serial killer to Alabama?
I can’t find anything to disagree with or wind you up about. I’ll return when I’ve thought of something.
Back soon.

I shall enjoy this rare consensus while it lasts, Joe.
A question I have been pondering over this evening: why is it that when Nick Griffin was rightly acquitted of the charge of stirring up racial hatred, there was no sign of Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty. I would have expected her to say something in support of freedom of speech. Silence. Now, though, we have Abu Qatada facing deportation and she’s all over the place holding forth about human rights etc etc.

Its amazing that people who live here - ok in a jail cell in his case - spout hate against us, plot to kill us and yet when we try to throw his arse out of the UK he runs off to get help from the lawyers,
You would think he would be happy to leave the land of the infidels.

Exactly fidothedog, if this place is such a den of iniquity, why do they insist on staying here?
February 26th, 2007 at 11:58 pm
Ooh, nicely done, Bel.
You responded to the gauntlet. (I hear the wheels of Bel’s mind a-thinking ‘How to wind up Joe, I know, the BNP…’)
Touchee.
Er.. Is nobody like Nick Griffin a good answer?
No, I thought not.
Point was Griffin WAS acquitted, this dude wasn’t. So not much for Shami to complain about in Griffin’s case.
Anyway, it was hardly a civil liberty issue. He was charged. The court heard the evidence. He was acquitted. No suggestion of an abuse of process.
Here, I suppose the human rights issue is the whole death penalty thing.
I quite like Ms Chakrabati anyway, think she’s quite sweet.
Oh, I’m still on the Transcendental aesthetic, BTW. Temporary hiatus in the old Kant reading.
February 26th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
My point about Shami was that she should at least have come out with a comment on the theme of ‘this is a victory for free speech.’ We normally hear her praising such ‘victories’, so why the silence then?
Kant I have abandoned for the moment. I hope to get back into it in the coming months.

Hi Bel
I am sick unto death of Gareth Pierce crying big tears over the “plight” of terrorists.
The learned judge had to do a bit of a back-flip to get to a sensible result. I am glad, but why oh why should I really give a flying f%$£ whether our little friend may or may not get tortured, abducted by aliens etc if returned to his home country?
What will it take for OUR rights to life to take precedence over a terrorist’s “right” not to be put in a situation where he may be tortured?
No one seems to care whether I may be blown up on a bus in my own country thanks to this muppet.
Does Gareth cry for this muppet’s victims?

Good to see you in these parts, Kris.
I agree. Whenever I see Gareth Peirce on television, my first thought is usually ‘which unsavoury type is she defending today?’

This is an area where I start growling: ‘Deport the bastards.’ All of us are moderate in many ways and extreme in one or two. The subject of this post finds me at my most extreme.
By the way, Bel, you’ve been tagged.

Because even the AQ’s of the world realise that living in a country that has TKMaxx is vastly superior to living in a country that doesn’t………….

Perhaps he likes going clubbing in secret.
(Sorry, Bel, digressing here) By the way, Morag, I love your blog. I am a long time lurker.
February 27th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
You’re right Bel.
My final answer: Nobody likes Nick Griffin.
May I recommend the ‘Ancestor’s Tale’ by Richard Dawkins.
Just finished it.
Great stuff.

I despair of the lawerly court circle we have in the countyr, making bleeding heart ‘Uman Rights cases for everyone and anyone.
Imbeciles they are not though as it is a nice little earner. You can always rely on them to get some state funds defending the indefensible. it is partly their fault that we ended up with Londonistan as the government grew tired of all the court appeals etc.
As for Jordan, let’s just hope ‘Abu’ he enjoys his spell in jail there.

Dear TL ………. Iamtalkingreally quickly so Bel doesn’t notice that we are Off Topic - thank you for kind remarks - totally agree on the clubbing business. Brings back awful memories of a misspent youth in Annabels………….:(
